General Questions

Can listening to prenatal music really benefit a baby?

Definitely! Think how music affects us – a tune can make us smile and sing along, relax and fall asleep, or remind us of something or someone special.

It is well known that a developing fetus can hear and react to sounds. Prenatal music is often considered a pre-linguistic language which is nourishing and stimulating to an unborn baby. Even though babies don't know anything about music, they are able to tell the difference between a melody and speech.

Prenatal stimulation programs influence the development of height, fine and gross motor skills, and speech and language acquisition. Children exposed to prenatal stimulation have displayed significantly superior developmental and intellectual achievements.

Prenatal sounds form an important developmental component because they provide a foundation for later learning and behavior. With prenatal sound stimulation the brain functions at a higher level of organization.

Babies remember music they hear in the womb. Some mothers have found that playing the same calming music they listened to before the baby was born helped to calm their babies after birth. By associating music with bedtime you can use it to train your baby to fall asleep.

Of course, there’s no need to take our word for it. Read what the experts are saying. (click here)

When is a good time to start using Lullabelly?

Expectant mothers should start using Lullabelly at the beginning of their 3rd trimester.

The sense of hearing is probably the most developed of all the senses before birth. Although a developing fetus can hear and react to sounds from as early as 20 weeks, active listening doesn't begin until the 24th week. The ear first appears in the 3rd week of gestation and it becomes functional by the 16th week. Ultrasound observations show that the fetus hears and responds to a sound pulse starting around 16 weeks, even before ear construction is complete. The cochlear structures of the ear appear to function by the 20th week and mature synapses have been found between the 24th and 28th weeks.

For this reason most formal programs of prenatal stimulation are usually designed to begin in the third trimester.

Average Development Stages of a Baby’s Auditory System

Week Eight

• In addition to its body, the baby’s ears are continuing to form externally and internally.

Week Fifteen

• The three tiny bones in the baby’s middle/inner ear have begun to harden. The auditory centers in their brain haven't developed yet, but their hearing capacity is in the process of developing.

Week Eighteen

• The nerve endings are in the process of connecting to the inner ear. Once this happens, the baby can hear the mother’s heartbeat.

Week Nineteen

• As the baby's hearing continues to improve, he or she may pick up voices in conversations — although it's probably hard to hear and define certain sounds.

Week Twenty

• The baby can now actually hear noises outside of the womb.

Week Twenty-Four

• The baby’s auditory system is fully developed. Familiar voices, music, and sounds that the baby becomes accustomed to during his or her development stages are often recognized and are very calming after birth.

Does Lullabelly help a mother and baby bond?

Prenatal music can be an effective tool in beginning the bonding process between the mother and the baby in her womb. Above all, parents should continue to sing, talk and read to their baby. It’s never too early!

By far, the most important sounds a baby hears from within the womb are his or her parent’s voices. The second most important sound is music!

While spoken language can take more than a year to develop, playing music is one of the earliest things parents can do with their children to help them get a head start on learning.

This time of relaxation and focus on the pending arrival of the baby also produces calming chemicals in the blood, which are transferred to the baby through the placenta. These chemicals allow baby and mother to share the bonding experience, laying a foundation for later learning.

Prenatal stimulation through music provides some babies with a sense of confidence and relaxation after they're born. An expectant mother will quickly discover that using Lullabelly is an excellent way to bond with her baby and share in the baby’s emotional and intellectual development.

This should be a special time of enjoyment and bonding shared between the parents and their baby.

What is the best type of music?

Most experts agree that almost any type of music is suitable for babies. Different kinds of music are essential and can be useful for the baby's development. Of course, everyone has their own personal musical preferences, so let that be your guide. But when it comes to playing tunes for your baby in the womb, think cheerful and simple.

If you like classical music and your baby appears to enjoy it too, go with that. Play your favorite songs, or spice things up with different tunes.

Anything with a good melody will do, although simple melodies and rhythms are usually best for prenatal music.

Take cues from your baby. Does he or she seem to enjoy the music you’re playing? Do you notice that your baby becomes animated when a certain tune is played?

Overall, playing music to your baby in the womb is safe, fun and has lasting education effects that can give a child a real head start in life.

What is a safe decibel level?

By itself, the sound environment of the womb is very rich. There are various interpretations as to the noise level, ranging between 30 to 96 dB. A whisper can register 30 dB. A normal conversation is about 60-70 dB. On the other hand, shouted conversations and motorcycles reach about 100 dB, and a loud rock concert has been measured at 115 dB.

What about playing music after birth?

Parents often discuss their experiences with music played during pregnancy. A common theme in these accounts is that the songs played prenatally provoked a very positive reaction in their babies after birth. The familiar music seems to capture the attention of their infants and relaxes them, particularly when they are cranky, over tired or feverish.

The benefits of music are not limited to the womb or even the early years of a child’s development. Ongoing music education has been proven to help children across a wide range of criteria, including overall academic performance.

Let music be an integral part of your child's life. Don't try to create the next Mozart or Einstein. The goal should be to assist in the education of your child and cultivate a love for music.
